About the Founder-Doug Sammons, 30 year Financial Services and Payments Pioneer

Over the past 30 years, Doug Sammons has been in the financial services and payments industry. He began his career, which spanned 22 years at Fifth Third Bank. Beginning at Midwest Payment Systems, he learned first hand how technology was leveraged to drive payments. Next, he moved into middle market and brought value to clients by understanding their financial needs and providing solutions to manage their business. His focus shifted to working with Municipal and Government Institutions as well as Correspondent Banking. It was during this part of his career when one of his clients asked if the bank could sponsor them into MasterCard RPPS. This where he identified the need and began to develop the solutions of connecting payment companies directly to the MasterCard platform enabling the processing of millions of payments directly to billers. At that time, in order to connect to MasterCard, companies had to be sponsored by a bank. That is when he became a primary referral resource for MasterCard and started the journey of working with third party payment processors (TPPP’s).

In 2009, a new payment processor asked if they could do the same in the merchant processing space. Partnering with Fifth Third Processing Solutions (formerly known as Vantiv, Worldpay, and now FIS), a solution was built for merchants to own the risk and manage all payment settlement. The Payment Facilitator model was developed at Vantiv. Doug and the Vantiv team worked with MasterCard in establishing the rules around the model and eventually trademarked the term PayFac.

In 2012, Doug joined Vantiv (now FIS). At FIS, he was responsible for building out the PayFac business. During this time, he established a significant number of new PayFac’s and long-term relationships in the merchant space.

Often times consultants have deep expertise and experience in either payments or banking. What makes Doug unique, is that he has both, therefore he can simplify the complex.

What’s in a name?

While on vacation a couple of years ago, my granddaughter, Gia, and I were in the ocean swimming and looking for sand dollars. The next day, we decided to go back to the ocean and Gia said to me, “Oppa, can we go look for some sand money again”. Even though it wasn’t obvious to me then, it makes so much sense now. A name of a company, product, or solution needs to be clear and easy to understand.

So when I was thinking about starting my company, I wanted a name that was clear and unique, but also holds meaning. What started as an idea ‘Sand Money Payments’ quickly transitioned to Sammoney Payments & Consulting. Sammoney combines Sammons + Money. The personal and reliable touch that connects you to payments to gain and grow your share of wallet.
